What building a consumer app taught me about shipping real software
We build apps and custom software at OpsPal. This week we shipped one of our own: Kinaura, a relationship compatibility app, built and published by OpsPal LLC, now live on the App Store.
It took over a year and three months. Here is what that taught me about building software, whatever you are building.
1. The vision you start with is not the product you ship
You start at 100% of the vision. By the time it is digestible and ready for real users, you have shipped a small slice of it. For Kinaura that meant simplifying the language, dropping concepts, and cutting visuals so the user's goal sat at the center. Cutting is the craft.
2. The thing you set out to build often is not the thing worth building
I set out to build a better psychological assessment. Along the way it became a tool where two people can read how they work together. That only happened because I kept building in modules and letting each answer open a new question. Build in layers, and stay willing to change what you think the product is.
3. Expect to rename it, rebuild it and pivot more than once
Kinaura started as Prism Dynamics. The name changed, the scope changed, and so did the product. Each pivot felt like a loss at the time. In hindsight each one made the next version smaller and clearer.
4. Projects stall, and that is normal
There were technical walls, long bug lists and stretches where I had to step away entirely. I stepped away more than once to care for my dad. Build for the possibility that you will have to stop and restart. Clear notes and clean structure make that survivable.
5. Measure what real people do
We are keeping the app free right now while we study how people actually use it, then improving the parts that matter. That is the same approach we take with client builds.
Have an idea for an app or custom software and not sure where to start? App development is scoped in fixed phases. And if you want to see what we built, Kinaura is free on iPhone: download it on the App Store.
